Abstract

An evaluation of 14 Robusta coffee progenies in Kluang, Johore showed significant differences in yield. Fresh berry yields ranged from 2.55 a 4.75 t/ha per year and green bean yields, 0.474.91 t/ha per year. Four top progenitors (MCR 09, MCR 10, MCR 11 and MCR 16) with green bean yields of 0.72, 0,86, 0.91 and 0.82 t respectively, and 100-green bean weights ranging from 14.14 g to 15.95 g were identified and selected. Their progenilors were propagated for the establishment of a polyclonal seed garden and the production of polyhybrid seeds for interim recommendation. Monthly yield frequencies for three consecutive years (1986-88) showed that peak seasons for harvesting varied from year to year. The mean monthly yield frequency was highest between October to January (45.3%), followed by the months of April to May (23.1%). Yield production problems in areas with no regular drought were also discussed.
