F; variation from hybridization of two 'Spanish' pineapple cultivars

Abstract

A cross between two pineapple cultivars. Gandul and Ilybricl 36. belonging to the Spanish group, generated a very wide specterum of  recombinantion the F1. The C.V. for 13 characters in the F1 were very large. in manv cases exceeding by two- fold that of the clonal parents. For all the character ranges covered by thc F1 segregants transgressed those of both the parents combined. The prospects in selection and development of improved cultivars in this F1 population are discussed.
