Abstract

Two field experiments were carried out in Muda to evaluate the efficacy of quinclorac in direct-seeded rice. Under severe competition from weeds. especially Echinochloa crus-galli, rice crop suffered 53% yield loss in Kubang Rotan and 93% in Ulu Sedaka. Applied at 10 days after seeding, quinclorac induced little visible injury to rice (MR 84 cultivar) at 300 to 700 g a.i./ha. Quinclorac gave very good control at 300 g/ha and cexcellent control on E. crus-galli at 500 and 700 g/ha. Sagittaria guyanensis and Scirpus lateriflorus were susceptible to the herbicide at 500 g/ha but Limnocharis flava and Cyperus difformis were tolerant. Ouinclorac was incffective against Leptochloa chinensis. Tank-mixtures of quinclorac at 300 g/ha with bensulfuron, 2.4-D or metsulfuron were promising for the control of broad spectrum weeds. It is concluded at quinclorac is a preferred alternative to molinate and oxadiazon but its usage is limited to areas where L. chinensis infestation is negligible.
