Abstract

A preliminary study on growth and carcass of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnir japonica) was carried out. The birds were fed a diet with 28% crude protein and 2 800 Kcal ME/kg of feed. Weekly growth performance until eight weeks of age was monitored. The quails were found to gain less weight between four and seven weeks of age. There was weight loss between seven and eight weeks of age. This was accompanied by less feed intake. The overall mortality was seven per cent. Thc mortality rate was higher during the first two weeks of growth. The meat to bone ratios for straight run quail at sixth and eighth week were 3.7 and 3.5 respectively which were comparable with the broiler chickens
