Abstract

The effects of shade and coffee varieties on the frequency and severity of branch damage by the black coffee borer, Xylosandrus compactus Eichh., were studied by assessing the damage on Robusta and Liberica coffee trees growing under shaded and unshaded conditions. Only Robusta coffee trees showed branch damage while no damage was recorded on Liberica coffee trees. In addition, the frequency and severity of damage by the borer were significantly higher (P:0.05) on shaded than on unshaded Robusta trees.
