Abstract

The infection of pineapple fruits (cultivar: Masmerah) by Erwinia chrysantthemi Burkholder et al. was accompanied by a copious exudation of fluid which increased from an average of 9. I ml/day,4 days after inoculation, to a peak of 63.7 ml/day 2 days later. The main bulk of exudate production occurred between 6 and 9 days after inoculation, after which production declined. E. chrysartthenri was present in large numbers in the exudate. At peak exudate production (seventh day). l013 cells/ml were isolated but declined subsequently to about 10cells/ml 3 days later. The significance of this result in relation to dissemination of the pathogen was discussed.
