Abstract
Enrapment of Bacillus sp. in alginate by both internal and external gelation methods was investigated. Extemally gelled Bacillus sp. particles were physically superior to the intemally immobilized particles. A 2% (w/v) alginate concentration was dcsirable for maximum extracellular amylase production. Hardening agents such as polyethyleneimine and glutaraldehyde pevented cell leakage but caused reuction in amylase activity. Clutaraldehyde was also found to be more detrimental.
