Abstract
Entrapment of Bacillus sp. in alginare by both internal and external gelation methods was investigated. Externally gelled Bacillus sp. particles were physically superior to the internally immobilized particles. A 2% (w/v) alginate concentration was desirable for maximum extracellular amylase production. Hardening agents such as polyethyleneimine and glutaraldehyde plevented cell leakage but caused reduction in amylase activity. Glutaraldehyde was also found to be more derimental.
