Abstract

Fruits of the mango (Mangifera indica L.) cultivar Harumanis harvested at different stages of maturity already showed symptoms of insidious fruit rot while still intact on the trees. Early harvesting at 1 - 2 weeks before the normal harvesting (i.e. 90-100 days after fruit set) only slightly reduced the incidence of the fruit rot problem. The fruit quality including chemical characteristics was considerably low. The use of ethephone as a ripening agent hastened the ripening process but caused no improvement in fruit quality either through reduction of the insidious fruit rot per se, or through improvement of chemical characteristics.
