Rodenticide use and development in Malaysia
C. H. lee and K. A. Kamarudin
Abstract
The development and use of rodenticides in Malaysia was discussed. Based on their mode of action, rodenticides are divided into acute and chronic poisons. The former are highly hazardous as they are generally fast-acting poisons while the latter are safer because they are anticoagulants. Of these two groups, acute poison was used earlier. However, their frequently associated problems of bait-shyness and hazardous nature led to the preferential use of much safer poisons such as warfarin from the 1960 onwards. The use of warfarin for a decade or more in some areas has brought about problems of resistance. However, the recently developed compounds have provided an alternative. The development and possible use of recently developed compounds are also discussed.
