Abstract

Mineralogy of mineral materials in 21 samples of lowland organic soils from Terengganu' MARDI pontian, MARDI Jalan Kebun and Tanjong Karang were qualitatively analyzed using X -Ray Diffraction. occurrence of different types of clay minerals was used in identifying the environment at the time of the deposition of these organic materials. The presence of smectite and vermiculite in the samples from Tanjong Karang and MARDI Jalan Kebun indicates the existence of brackish or marine environment. Their absence in the samples from Terengganu and MARDI Pontian, on the other hand, indicates a freshwater or riverine environment.
