Abstract

In a series of mating studies, 2 isolates of Phytophthora palmivora (Butl.) Butl on Piper nignum L. were paired with each other as well with 7 other P. palmivora isolates on other host plants. Results indicate the 2 P. polmivora on Piper nigrum are sexually compatible. There is now evidence to show that at least 3 distinct strains of P.palmivora on Piper nigrum are present in Malaysia: 2 sexually compatible strains and an atypical strain reported earlier. The importance of this finding in relation to breeding of Piper nigrum for foot-rot resistance is discussed
