INFLUENCE OF IRRIGATION STRATEGY ON WATER USE, YIELDS AND ROOTS DISTRIBUTION OF PEANUTS (ARACHTS HYPOGAEA L.)

SUMMARY

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of irrigation strategy on periodic water depletion rates and irrigation water-use efficiency for peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.). In this experiment the treatments were:- (1) Control, no irrigation, (2) light, frequent irrigation, and (3) medium, infrequent irrigation. Periodic water depletion rates were 4-300% higher in the irrigated plots compared to control plots. Estimated drainage was always higher in the irrigated plots (highest during high rainfall) than in non irrigated plots. Average peanut pod yields were 3741, 4193 and 4386 kg/ha for treatments (1), (2) and (3) respectively. These values were not significantly different at 5% probability level. Irrigation-use efficiencies based on peanut pod yields lor treatments (2) and (3) were 29 and 49 kg/ha/ cm.
