SUMMARY

Protocorms of Aranda Christine 80 were cultured on Modified Vacin and Went liquid medium. Four treatments with 5, 10, 20 and 40 protocorms per flask were cultured for a duration of 3, 6 and 9 weeks respectively. Results indicate that treatment with 10 protocorms per flask cultured for 3 weeks has attained the highest multiplication rate as compared to the others.

SYED KAMARUDDIN BIN SYED WAZIR

SUMMARY

The efects of shade on the growth of mother plants as uell as on the ease of rooting of cuttings of tomato were studied Shaded mother plants were taller than unshaded plants due mainly to longer internode. Shading the entire plant for four weeks improved the quality of roots but not the number of cuttings rooted.

LABORATORY EVALUATION OF 0.025% WARFARIN AGAINST RATTUS TIOMANICUS

C.H. LEE AND MD. D. MUSTAFA

SUMMARY

Laboratory feeding tests were conducted to determine the efficacy of 0.025% warfarin against Rattus tiomanicus trapped from cocoa-coconut fields in Mardi Research Station in Hilir Perak. No-choice feeding periods of 2, 4,6,8 and 10 days gave mortalities of 25, 45, 80. 95 and 100% respectively for the pooled data. Mark variation in susceptibility to warfarin among the individuals was noted. The lethal feeding period (LFP50) with 95% fiducial limits were 3.20 days for females and 3.77 days for males. No significant difference was found between the mean of the two sexes and the data was pooled for probit analysis. This provided a base-line on the susceptibility of R. tiomanicus to warfarin. The upper 95% fiducial limit calculated for the LFP 95 indicated that survival following a 14-day feeding period on 0.025% warfarin bait is a suitable test for detecting warfarin resistance.

PHOSPHATE ADSORPTION CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME MALAYSIAN SOILS II. RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER SOIL PROPERTIES

ABDUL RASHID AHMAD AND HUGH L. FOSTER

SUMMARY

An attempt was made to relate phosphate adsorption capacities, quantified by the adsorption parameters, estimated from Freundlich and Langmuir equations, to other soil properties. The adsorption parameters used are the Freundlich adsorption coefficient (F-a) and the Maximum Buffer Caoacitv (MBC) . From simple correlation analysis, the level of free iron oxides and organic matter and the size of the silt + clay fraction were found to be significantly related to P-adsorption. Partial correlation analysis indicated that pH and silt + clay % played the most important role in P - adsorption. The soils under study may be divided into two groups of P - adsorption capacity depending on the site + clay content being lower or greater than the critical value of 45%. On further examination of the effect of pH it was found that the interplay of redox potential and pH, determined the formation of free iron oxide in soils. Free iron oxide in turn dictated the process of phosphate adsorption. Equations relating the two adsorption parameters to pH, pe + pH and silt + clay % of a soil were formulated. A simple method of estimating P - adsorption capacity was suggested.

RAIMLAH MOHAMAD dan MOHAMMAD MD.ALI

SUMMARY

Deficiency symptoms of Cu were observed in pineapple cv Mauritius when planted on virgin peat soils. It occured at the early stage of plant growth (fourth to fifth month of planting) and was sporadic in distribution. Hence, in a non-severe Cu-dificient field, the mean fruit yield was not affected.
