Abstract
The nitrogen response of direct-seeded rice at four locations over two rice rowing seasons in Besut lrrigation Scheme is discussed. Seasons and locations are regarded as random variables. There is no significant interaction between season and treatment or location and treatment. However, the nitrogen response curves occur at different elevations for the locations and  between the two seasons. The difference in elevation of the curves is duet o the base  yield.Yield without nitrogen fertilizer application is between3 .5 and  5.2t/ha and accounts for 65-80% f the maximum yield. The average agronomic efficiency to nitrogen fertilizer application is 15 kg grain per kilogram of nitrogen applied at 40 kg N/ha. Maximum yield enhancement to nitrogen is in the magnitude of 1.4t /ha. Nitrogen fertilizer requirement for maximum fit is in the range of 106-161 kg N/ha with a yield of 4.9-6.7 t/ha.
