Abstract
The effects of maturity stage and planting season on the nutritional composition (proximate, mineral and vitamin) of two varieties of kacangma, namely Leonurus sibiricus (LS) and Leonurus sibiricus var. albiflorus (LA) were determined. Studies were conducted on the plants with maturity stages of 40, 70 and 100 days at 2 seasons each with an average monthly rainfall of 217.0 mm and 328.1 mm respectively. Crude fibre and carbohydrate contents increased with the plant maturity while moisture, protein and ash contents declined. Fat content declined at the maturity stage of 70 days but increased again at 100 days. Calcium and iron concentrations increased while phosphorus, sodium and potassium declined. Vitamin A, B2 and C declined with maturity but vitamin B1 showed no significant difference. Kacangma at the maturity stage of 40 days showed higher nutritional contents especially in mineral and vitamin. Overall, LS contained higher level of nutrients compared to LA except for vitamin A. Season with higher rainfall had an adverse effect on nutrient contents of kacangma.
