Package design for the release of organic volatile in the headspace of the package

Abstract
The sorption and diffusion of 2-nonanone in LLDPE was characterized at different concentrations, partial pressures and vapour activities. The sorption was measured by gravimetric technique using a Cahn electrobalance. Sorption behaviour of 2-nonanone by LLDPE showed two mode sorption phenomena as a function of concentration and vapour activity. A model for modified atmosphere packaging of minimally processed fresh produce can be developed in relation to the organic volatile transport process. The mass transfer model includes the sorption and equilibrium solubility of 2-nonanone in the polymer material and can be used to calculate the amount of the package area needed to maintain target concentrations in the headspace of the package.
