Potential of plant probiotics for sustainable crop production

Abstract
Probiotics are living microorganisms known to boost human health. In the context of crop production, probiotics are microorganisms that contribute to plant health and fitness, and simultaneously improve plant tolerance to extreme conditions. Additionally, plant probiotics are also capable in enhancing plant nutritional value via various plant growth promoting mechanisms such as nitrogen fixation, mineral solubilisation and siderophore production. The demand for food and food security are imperative and sustainable crop production is a way forward for tackling these issues. Hence, a more environmentally friendly option would be preferable. In view of the fact that plant probiotics as an alternative to chemical fertilisers and pesticides, thus this review discusses the importance and function of plant probiotics in plant growth promotion and plant health towards sustainable crop production. Challenges in developing plant probiotics as effective inoculants and its potential use for sustainable crop production are also discussed.
