Abstract
Sixty-five sows and gilts. selected from a herd with a mean parity of 2.79 and mean gestation length of 114:± 1.6 days. were randomly allocated to four treatment groups as follows: (I) 15 animals received 10 mg dinoprost tromethamine on day 114 of gestation.(I) 15 animals received 10 mg dinoprost tromethamine on day 113 of gestation(III) 15 animals received 10 mg dinoprost tromethamine on day 113 of gestation followed by 20 I .U. of oxytocin 20 h later (0700h the following day) and ( IV) 20 animals as untreated control . Farrowing during day- time (0700-1700 h) occurred in 60. 33.53 and 10% of animal in group I, II, III and IV respectively. Group I animals had a singnificantly longer gestation length (115.7 days. P <0.01) than the other groups. Farrowing induction had no adverse effects on the reproductive performance of the animal. Results indicate that dinoprost tromethamine can be used alone or in conjunction with oxytocin to induce parturition without any detrimental effects.
