Abstract

The optimal temperature for photosynthesis of the oil palm (Elaeis guincensis. Jacq) is close-to normal maximum shade temperatures in the humid tropics, but leaves exposed to the sun may be over 10°C above shade temperature. Photosynthesis by such leaves is probably only 50 percent of the rate at the optimal temperature, but the importance of this in terms of whole canopy photosynthesis is not known.
