Abstract

Nine maize varieties were evaluated over six environments. In most cases the differences between varieties in each environments were marked. However, variety x environment (linear) interactions was not significant. Kisan, Bogor Comp. 2 and Metro were found to be stable varieties with b= 1.0 and having minimum mean squares for deviation. Of the three varieties, Bogor, Comp. 2 gave the highest mean yield, 17.6% higher than the overall mean. The unstable group comprised Guatemala (PB 5) and Jawahar, having bi <1.0 and College White x Tuxpeno,

UPCA Var 1, 2 & 4 having bi<I.0. Mean yields and regression coefficients of varieties were found to be highly related.

Abstract

In a rearing with 3 bivoltine polyhybrids namely Cansiglio, Grappa and Piave, results obtained showed that bivoltine polyhybrids can be successfully reared to produce cocoons under lowland ambient conditions. Performance, cocoon weight, filament length and filament title differed between polyhybrids but these are not significantly different. With improved rearing Cocoons produced were to encouraging quality and projected yields of 17-23 kilograms were obtained.

Abstract

Paper I reports the effect of protein levels on the reproductive performance of Kedah-Kelantan heifers. Twenty-seven pregnant heifers were allocated to 6 treatments, with 5 different levels of crude protein viz. at 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24%. The sixth treatment contains 18% crude protein but no urea and has only soybean as a protein source. The animals were fed to appetite individually a ratio of 75:25 of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) and concentrate in terms of dry matter intake. Changes in liveweight, birth weight and feed conversion were measured for a total of 322 days of experimentation. During the period of gestation, no significant differences were found between treatments for any of the parameters measured. Dams fed diets containing higher than 18% crude protein gained less weight, reached lower liveweight before calving and lost more weight after parturition. There was very little difference in the gestation length and birth weight of the calves. The different components of foetal tissues and foetus also showed little difference. Significant differences (P<0.01) between treatments were found for the liveweight changes during the period of lactation. Dams fed 12% crude protein and soybean meal maintained their weight during lactation and were significantly different from dams fed 18, 21 and 24% crude protein in their liveweight at weaning, their average daily gain and their weight loss during lactation. There was no significant difference in the feed intake during either gestation or lactation. The inclusion of high levels of urea in ruminant feed and its effect on reproduction was discussed.

Abstract

The present study was carried out with extremely limited genetic material. However, similar study should be carried out with wider range of material in order to draw definite conclusions. On the basis of the present technique, it was possible to identify pisifera from dura and tenera. ln addition, one could also differentiate between E. guineensis, E. oleifera and their hybrid.

Abstract

The four varieties of groundnut mentioned can be made into peanut butter. However, another experiment is required to check on the effect of different emulsifier on the spreadability and consistency of the peanut butter obtained. As the added oil also exert an effect on the spreadability and consistency the quantity and type of added oil should also be investigated. Finally, experiment should be conducted to study the effect of flavourings on the overall acceptance of the peanut butter.
