SUMMARY

The occurence of first oestrus after calving and the subsequent oestrous cycle lengths of the imported Jersey cattle in MARDI, Serdang were studied. Mean intervals from calving to first oestrus for lactations I, II and III were 53.9 ,42.1 and 31 .7 days respectively. The overall mean interval from calving to first oestrus was 44.8 ± 24.3 days with a range of 10 to 126 days and a coefficient of variation of 54.2%. Based on 104 first oestrus periods, 77% were observed within 60 days postpartum. The mean oestrous cycle lengths prior to and following breeding were respectively 33.2 and 35.0 days with an overall average of 34.7 days. Mean cycle lengths for lactations I and II were respectively 35.8 and 33.1 days. In 350 oestrous cycles studied intervals less than 16, 17 - 25 and above 25 days occurred in 10.0, 43.4 and 46.6% of the cycles respectively. About 86% of the oestrus were detected in the morning from 8.30 to 9.30 a.m.
