SUMMARY

In this experiment 3 diets containing 10%, 20% and 30%, rice straw were fed to sheep. The parameters studied include voluntary feed intake (VFI), animal weights, rumen volatile fatty acids (VFA), rumen ammonia and rumen pH. The results showed no significant difference in VFI and animal weights among the 3 diets. The rumen fermentation parameters however indicated 10%level of straw as the optimal level. Rumen fermentation appeared to be retarded as rice straw increased from 10 to 30%. In diet 3 (30% rice straw) the average VFA production was 17.07 equ/1000 ml, rumen ammonia production was 24.04 mg/1000 ml followed by an above average rumen pH of 6.64. The rumen fermentation parameters were however inconclusive possibly due to the shortage of available energy or molasses, studies concering duodenal fermentation, rumen volume and microbial protein determination.

SUMMARY

A young partial albino (yellow-brown) male R. argentiventer was caught in the rice field in Bumbong Lima and was studied in the laboratory. It was found to be fertile when mated with a normal coloured female. Morphological characters of the partial albino rat was compared with the normal coloured rats.

YEONG. S.W., SYED ALI S.A.B AND AZIZAH, M. D

SUMMARY

A study is reported on the incorporation of 'Prolima', a palm oil sludge fermented product (SFP) in layer diets. Three layer diets containing 10, 20 and 30% SFP respectively to replace soybean meal as a protein source were compared to corn-soy diets with or without fish meal supplementation. Dekalb Amer Link brown egg layers were used for this trial for a period of 49 weeks starting from 30 weeks of age. The results indicated that diets containing SFP up to 10% were comparable to the control diet in terms of egg number, percent egg production, average egg mass produced and feed efficiency (feed/egg mass). The presence of SFP in diets did not affect the egg specific gravity, percent yolk, albumen and shell weights, yolk index and Haugh unit

SUMMARY

Pods of Phaseolus vulgaris of several sizes can photosynthesize and contribute to the growth of the pods and seeds. They were the major sinks at the reproductive stages. When whole plants except the pods were labelled 60% o 14C- assimilates were found in the pods when only the pods were labelled, 72% of 14C - assimilates was found in the pods.

NORDIN YUSOF, ABU BAKAR CHIK AND W.E. WAN HASSAN

SUMMARY

The occurence of first oestrus after calving and the subsequent oestrous cycle lengths of the imported Jersey cattle in MARDI, Serdang were studied. Mean intervals from calving to first oestrus for lactations I, II and III were 53.9 ,42.1 and 31 .7 days respectively. The overall mean interval from calving to first oestrus was 44.8 ± 24.3 days with a range of 10 to 126 days and a coefficient of variation of 54.2%. Based on 104 first oestrus periods, 77% were observed within 60 days postpartum. The mean oestrous cycle lengths prior to and following breeding were respectively 33.2 and 35.0 days with an overall average of 34.7 days. Mean cycle lengths for lactations I and II were respectively 35.8 and 33.1 days. In 350 oestrous cycles studied intervals less than 16, 17 - 25 and above 25 days occurred in 10.0, 43.4 and 46.6% of the cycles respectively. About 86% of the oestrus were detected in the morning from 8.30 to 9.30 a.m.
