Spikelet number dristribution in panicles within a hill for four varieties of padi

Abstract
This study showed that spikelet number variation between panicles within hill is more important than between hills within plot or between plots. Sampling schemes involving the topmost three panicles within hill to evaluate this yield component are bias due to the large deviation from the actual average value for the hill. For practicality and reasonably good precision,a sampling scheme involving 5 hills and 5 panicles/hill is recommended for the evaluation of this yield component.

Recommended sources of blast resistance

Abstract
Several varieties of rice which have been found to be consistently resistant in the International Blast Nurseries for eight to ten years and which have performed well in local blast nurseries are recommended for use in breeding programmes for blast resistance.The performance in Malaysia of selected improved varieties from eight countries are also reported.

The survival of Erwinia Chrysanthemi in peat and mineral soil

Abstract
In vitro studies showed that E. chrysanthemi was unable to survive in unsterilized peat soil but could survive in unsterilized mineral soil for 7 days. When these soils were sterilized however, the pathogen could survive in both for a1 least 18 days, although the percentage recovery was higher for the mineral soil. Direct soil isolations of the pathogen from infected pineapple fields (peat) were negative.

Effects of nitrogen and potassium on the growth, mean fruit weight and fruit quality of pineapple

Abstract
Growth and crop responses of the Singapore Spanish cultivar to five level of nitrogen (0-612 kg N ha-1) and six levels of potassium (0-1,120 kg K2O ha-1) were studied.The greatest growth response to applied nitrogen was recorded in the 0-336 kg N ha-1 range. With potassium treatments, no significant effect on the plant height was observed during the first six month of growth. Subsequent to this period positive response in the plant height to applied potassium was recorded up to 896 kg K2O ha-1. Increasing potassium application beyond 448 kg K2O ha-1,however, did not cause any further increase in leaf production . Increasing apptication of nitrogen up to 672 kg N ha-1 resulted in a positively quadratic response in the mean fruit weight and a negatively linear response in the frutt quality. With potassium application up to 1,120 kg K2O ha-1 a positive and quadratic response was recorded for both the meanfruit weight and quality. No interactions between the elemental fertilizers were found.

Direct substitution of maize with sorghum in broiler diets

Abstract
Two feeding trials were conducted on commercial broilers fed graded levels of sorghum as a direct substitute for maize. Five experimental rations containing varying percentages of maize viz.60, 45 , 30, 15, 0% were used and these were replaced by sorghum at 15, 30, 45 and 60% level of the diets. The chicks were initially fed with broiler starter mash in the first four weeks and the experimental rations were provided from the fifth to the twelfth week of age. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in the feed intake, growth rate and feed conversion efficiency between the five groups. No problem which could be attributed to the presence of tannin in sorghum was encountered. Deficiency of xanthophyll in high level sorghum diets was observed to affect skin and shank pigmentation of the birds but this could be corrected by the addition of artificial xanthophyll in the diets.
